"St.
Mark's"
21" x
21" acrylic on watercolor paper
|
$2,200.00
|
Architecture has always been popular subject
matter for paintings. Its design and construction has been a vehicle
through which man has given expression to his finest creative energies.
None of these creations have been more loved and respected than Europe's
great cathedrals. St. Mark's Cathedral
in Venice, Italy is the subject of this painting.

"Wilderness Church"
15" x 15" acrylic
on masonite panel
|
$900.00
|
|
With the tourist season over and the snow
covering the paved pathways, this scene at Silver Dollar City evokes
images of generations past when life was much quieter and much simpler.
The rail fences and the logs used in the construction of this "Wilderness
Church" were prepared with hand tools typical of the late
19th century.

"Cross
Over Golindrinas"
21" x
21" acrylic on watercolor paper
|
$1,750.00
|
In the process of bringing Christianity
to the indians of the American southwest, the Franciscians left behind
an architectural heritage that includes many adobe chapels and churches.
Because of my architectural experience, I find these structures fascinating.
In addition to their historical significance, they make great subjects
for paintings such as "Cross Over Golindrinas".

"Bridge
Over McKisic Creek"
22" x
22" acrylic on watercolor paper
|
$1,950.00
|
The many creeks of NW Arkansas provide
abundant inspiration for the landscape painter. Many of my most recent
paintings are inspired by the lush foliage, gravel bars, clear water,
and terrific reflections that are a part of these creeks. In "Bridge
Over McKisic Creek" I have included a bridge that testifies
to the presence of man and his additions to the natural landscape.

"Last
Snow at Tanyard Creek"
24" x
24" acrylic on masonite panel |
$2,300.00
|
The winter landscape presents a challenge
to painters because of the limited local color. In spite of this,
it is a favorite subject for my work. The dark algae on the bottom
of Tanyard Creek makes the water appear almost black. Add to that
a late snow and you have the components of a dynamic composition for
a limited palette painting.

"On Bath House
Row "
21" x 29" acrylic on watercolor paper |
$2.400.00
|
The bath houses
of Hot Springs are reminders of the rich and sometimes controversial
history of this beautiful city in the mountains of central Arkansas.
Although many of them are not currently functioning in their original
capacity, these bath houses are still popular subjects for paintings.
This painting, "On Bath House Row", is a close-up
of an attractive architectural detail.

"Stables"
21" x 29" acrylic on watercolor paper |
$2,400.00
|
Once the home of
popular riding stables, this old barn has long been an icon to residents
of Bella Vista Village, AR. Like many such structures it recently
fell victim to progress. Replaced by a new elementary school, only
nostalgic memories remain to remind us of it's place in the hearts
and history of this village.

$2.400.00
|
Another view of
of the riding stables at Bella Vista Village, AR:
Overgrown with weeds and suffering from neglect, this once thriving
business is now only a hint of the role it played in the community.
This painting was done only weeks before the barn was demolished to
make room for new construction.

"Fallen"
18"
x 24" acrylic on canvas |
$1,750.00
|
For years I had watched this old pine
tree, from it's healthy upright position to it's current fallen and
decaying condition. Falling victim to pine beetles and destined to
blend into the soil "from whence it came", it somehow represented
a profound metaphor for the life cycle of all living things. After
sketching and photographing it many times, I was finally compelled
to bring closure to this relationship by painting "Fallen".

"Dancing
With a White Elephant"
14" x

$1,175.00
|
These onyx carvings decorate the mantle
over my fireplace. I am often intrigued by their translucency and
subtle color variations. They seem to virtually glow under the light,
and the shadows on the wall behind them echo their form. These fascinating
characteristics make them a challenging subject for the painting,
"Dancing With a White Elephant".

Although weathered and showing evidence
of it's age, this "Eureka Springs House" still shows
signs of it's more prosperous days. In the spring, summer or fall
seasons it is virtually engulfed by foliage typical of this Ozark
town that we affectionately call "Little Switzerland".

"Church
at Lamy"
21" x

$2,400.00

As an architect, I am fascinated by the
indigenous architecture of the American southwest, especially the
adobe structures. None of these structures are more beautiful than
the religious architecture ranging from small chapels to larger and
more striking examples such as this "Church at Lamy".

The rich earthy color of the adobe structure
as a backdrop for the "Girl in a Purple Shirt" was
just too much to resist. The predominance of muted earthy colors in
this high plains desert setting makes any incident of a bright color
much more significant.

"Ruins"
10" x
14" acrylic on watercolor board |
$560.00
|
A painting such as "Ruins"
can't fully communicate the sense of mystery one feels standing among
the ruins of an ancient civilization that abandoned what appeared
to be a thriving community. What motivated such a move? Where did
they go? These architectural remnants enriched by the mystery are
tempting subjects for an artist.

"Santa Fe Suburbs"
10"
x 14" acrylic on canvas
|
$560.00
|
As an architect I admire any attempt to
maintain the regional character of the built environment. Although
contemporary materials and the technology differ, the aesthetic of
"Santa Fe Suburbs" is still reminiscent of the adobe
architecture that is the heritage of this city and this region of
the USA. In spite of the temptation to paint the older and more authentic
adobe structures, this newer "house in the suburbs" looks
quite at home in it's environment.

"The
Color of Spring"
21"
x 21" acrylic on watercolor paper |
$1,750.00
|
This painting, "The Color of Spring"
is about the coming of spring to this old pecan orchard. It is about
the colors and textures of our ever-changing landscape, both natural
and man-made. It is about man creating his "places" within
the natural environment. This combination of the natural and the man-made
is the subject of many of my paintings.

"Hill
Town "
16" x
20" acrylic on canvas |
$1,300.00
|
I have a fascination with Italian hill
towns. The subject of this painting is Assisi, Italy, the home of
St. Francis of Assisi. One can't walk it's streets without being aware
of it's rich history. A painter can't walk it's streets without being
inspired by the form, rich textures and colors of it's architecture.
Such a walk was the inspiration for this painting, "Hill Town".

The subject of this painting is a composition
of fragments from the memory of several places. Sometimes it just
seems right to combine fragmented memories in a painting of a hypothetical
subject. If they don't exist in this combination, perhaps they should.
